With expert guidance, meadows transform into a smorgasbord of herbal discovery.
At the edge of the mountain village of Gehlberg, an abundance of herbs fill the meadows. What appears at first glance to be an ordinary stretch of green grass becomes a salad bar and a pharmacy all at once through the expert eyes of an herbalist. You might have heard of wild garlic and dandelions, but what about lady’s mantle, spignel, common hawkweed or Good-King-Henry? These herbs and many more grow along the road and in the partial shade of the woods. The land between the Thuringian Forest and the Thuringian Slate Mountains has always been rich in medicinal herbs. Today, herbalists have joined forces under the initiative ‘Olitätenland’ to preserve this tradition and ensure that it will be passed onto future generations. This special herb walk will challenge your taste buds and fill your pockets with unusual greens that you probably won’t find at your local supermarket.
